"You might recognise Pilgrim Street which runs from the Tyne Bridge to Northumberland Street and was once part of the A1 Motorway before it was diverted away from the city centre. It is said to have got its name from the pilgrims who lodged in it, that came from all parts of the kingdom to worship at Our Lady's chapel at Jesmond. They would congregate at the inn on the street on the way, hence the name stuck. These days you are more likely to find a Subway sandwich than a pilgrim but with this painting I’ve taken a retro look at the street and its approach to the Tyne Bridge in the days of trams and very few cars!"
